Ernie Sims III and the Big HITS Foundation have officially kicked off their STARS Mentoring Academy! STARS (Standing Tall and Reaching for Success) Mentoring Academy is a program under the youth leadership division of the Ernie Sims Big HITS Foundation.
STARS will afford opportunities for youth participants in the program to take part in a curriculum of activities throughout the year that are structured to encourage youth to dream beyond the often-oppressive conditions of dysfunctional and negative environments and lifestyles.
For Ernie Sims, the idea for STARS came from an integral part of the Big HITS Foundation’s mission–giving back to the community and that’s just what the STARS Academy will do. The Big HITS Foundation team traveled all the way back to Ernie Sims’ Elementary School, Pineview Elementary, to launch the program. The Foundation has partnered with Pineview to work directly with their students from 1st – 5th grade for the 2016-17’ school year.
The program curriculum will involve a variety of activities and workshops to help the Pineview Elementary School students become successful leaders, including:
- One on One/Group Mentoring
- Youth Exposure and Enrichment Events (college tours, field trips, etc.)
- Youth Career Exploration Seminars and Workshops
- Bullying/Cyberbullying Prevention Workshop
- Sporting/Recreational Events/Activities
Through these activities the STARS Mentoring Academy hopes to expose, train and mentor youth to help them become good citizens and leaders as they grow up and create their own path in the world.
